Born and raised in New Jersey, Sonia Rao first found her sound in classical music, studying violin, piano, and flute from kindergarten through high school and performing with the New Jersey State Youth Orchestra. She found her voice late in high school, and having fallen in love with the sound of the piano in particular, started singing and playing at local open mics.
Sonia relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area to study psychology at UC Berkeley. She began touring the local open mic circuit, where she found collaborators and band members along the way. She was invited to perform around the Bay Area and Los Angeles, and has performed at such venues as the Rockit Room, Angelica’s Bistro, and Hollywood’s Pig ‘n Whistle and Cabana Club. She has now immersed herself in songwriting, singing, and collaborating with other Bay Area artists.
Influenced by her friends’ love lives, the nightly news, people who walk by her window in North Beach, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, and violinist Vanessa Mae, Sonia continues to write and perform in the Bay Area and hopes that her lyrics and music reach some part of you.
